Quantum Leap RA from EastWest adds rare and unique instruments from Africa, Europe, India, the Americas, Australia, the Far East, the Middle East, and Turkish Empires to a composer's arsenal of sounds. The instrument's PLAY interface allows access to each instrument's expressive nuances including portamento, repetition, legato and improved micro-tuning, making it possible to create realistic performances.
Another aspect of this virtual instrument is the recorded ethnic ensembles. This was done with African drums, bagpipes, gamelan, and a Middle Eastern string section. The sound of these ensembles cannot be realistically simulated by layering solo instruments.
Stormdrum 3 is the first virtual instrument to include EastWest's new PLAY 4 software. In PLAY 4, EastWest replaced some third party components; added Avid's new AAX format that will allow Pro Tools 11 users to use EastWest's virtual instruments 64-bit, greatly improving performance; added new time-stretch software optimized for loops (with sync to sequencer); added a new mixer page (with sub. EastWest Studios (formerly known as Western Studio, a component of United Western Recorders and later Ocean Way Recording) is a recording studio complex located at 6000 West Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Originally constructed by Bill Putnam in the 1960s, the studios are currently owned by sound developer Doug Rogers and managed by Candace Stewart.
RA was captured with a phase-accurate 8-microphone setup that gives a complete 3-dimensional image of the instrument. This type of clear and broad sound takes to artificial or sampled reverb extremely well. Microphones used in the recording process were Neumann U67 (U47s as alternates), Neumann M50, AKG C12, and Schoeps.
